Created by Colonel Sir James Horlick with the assistance of Gardener Kitty Lloyd Jones in 1944, Achamore Gardens is the home of Horlick’s renowned Rhododendron and Camellia Collection. Flourishing in Gigha's warm microclimate, the 54-acre gardens hosts many notable and unusual plants and trees from around the world.

The gardens have suffered years of neglect due to a lack of available funds, however the Trust is now committed to finding a sustainable future for the gardens. The Trust has now employed a team of gardeners, including a Head Gardener and apprentices, to undertake the restoration works. The gardens are now beginning to thrive under improved management and finances, however investment is required to restore original features and develop new deisgns with reflect 21st century gardening.

The community have always recognised Achamores importance in terms of horticulture, heritage, economic and social value. The community has contributed directly in recent years as to the direction and vision for Achamore. A 10-year development plan was created in 2020 to outline these visions and is currently being implemened as and when funding opportunities arise.

Whilst large investment is needed to deliver significant re-development in areas of Achamore, the gardens team and volunteers have been working hard to clear back over grown areas, plant trees, resolve drainage issues, and create better access throughout the gardens. Therefore, even now, Achamore is well worth the visit.
