Zero Carbon Gigha

In Gigha there are a variety of groups that all share an overarching vision and desire to make the island a greener, cleaner place. These groups are aiming to enhance and positively develop the island for both the benefit of the community and the environment, and are working towards providing the community with the means to live life more sustainably through simple grass roots efforts, events and community engagement.

Zero Carbon Gigha is a community led group who are working to reduce the island’s carbon footprint by encouraging responsible tourism, reducing waste, introducing community composting, improving storage, exploring sustainable water use, and reducing energy consumption. Up to now the group have had many success by establishing:

- The Gigha Food Group, whose ethos is to share recipes and produce, with a sustainable outlook to food growing and preservation. The group meet each month with a different theme from foraging, eggs, halibut and apples to Gigha's own brewed beer! Check out recipes from the community in the link: Gigha Food Group Recipes

- Improved recycling facilities for visitors and the community by collaborating with Argyll and Bute Council for additional recycling services. The group also worked with Gigha Primary School to promote the use of Terracyle boxes to recycle batteries, dental products and stationery.

- A free energy saving lightbulb and tree was issued to every household.

- Numerous community engagement events to raise awareness on: reducing water use, "make and mend", composting, and light pollution in collaboration with Dark Skies.
